Consultation – Queensbury Academy reduction of Published Admission Number (PAN)
The Published Admission Number (PAN) at Queensbury Academy is currently 210. This means that the number of pupils admitted to the academy in year 7 each year is a maximum of 210. The Trustees and Senior Leadership Team at Queensbury Academy wish to reduce this by 30 places which will result in an annual pupil intake each September of 180.
Each year Queensbury Academy has a number of school places unallocated; it is therefore proposed to reduce the PAN to 180 to reflect local pupil demand. In 2019 over 40 pupils who entered year 7 lived outside of the area. The need for these pupils to travel to school can and does have a significant impact on traffic congestion, attendance and late arrivals to school.
Reducing the PAN will assist the Trustees and Senior Leadership Team in providing stability to their long-term planning while continuing to provide an appropriate number of places for future pupil numbers living in the surrounding area and attending one of the local primary schools.
The current PAN of 210 is significantly higher than demand from the local primary schools even if all pupils transferred to Queensbury Academy. Reducing the PAN will enable the school to meet local demand and reconfigure costs to reflect intake. It should be noted that the purpose of the proposed reduction is not to cap admissions permanently at the lower level, but to bring the admission capacity in line with the actual demand from local pupils.
The majority of school's income funding is based upon the actual number of pupils who attend, not the set Published Admission Number (PAN), therefore there will be no financial detriment to Queensbury's income through this reduction. A reduced PAN of 180 has been modelled by the Trust to ensure that the school will be financially robust in terms of efficient timetabling and resource allocation. This will enable the school to deploy its resources more efficiently in targeting educational outcomes
